The San Antonio River Walk

Conceived by architect Robert Hugman in the 1920’s, the San Antonio River Walk was created as an alternative to paving over the defiant San Antonio River, which was prone to flooding and home to some unsavory characters, making the area unsafe for residents and visitors alike. In 1939, a network of 17,000 feet of walkways, 20 bridges, and extensive plantings including live oaks was built below street level, encouraging pedestrian traffic, and creating an instant tourist attraction. The River Walk expanded in the 1960’s with the addition of the Tower of the Americas and several hotels were to follow in its wake. In 1981, the Hyatt Regency added a new pedestrian walkway with concrete waterfalls, waterways and indigenous landscaping that linked Alamo Plaza to the River Walk. Today, the San Antonio River Walk offers a wide variety of hotels, shopping, dining, nightclubs, and entertainment for visitors to enjoy.
